It is hard to believe the Grand Avenue Festival for 2012 is coming up this weekend. Seems like we were just at the last one. The Grand Avenue Festival 2012 is bound to be a lot of fun. Its artsy and filled with unexpected oddities.

Grand Avenue, in downtown Phoenix, AZ has a rich history. At one time it was the highway in and out of Phoenix for visitors from Hollywood and other parts of California. It had a trolley car line and was home to much industry and hotels. In later years it fell into ruin and few embraced the region. However, that has all changed.

Today Grand Avenue is home to many artists and forward thinkers. The Grand Avenue Merchants Association and nearby dwellers have created a unique neighborhood filled with a variety of businesses and things to do. There is no other area in Phoenix quite like it.

To celebrate it’s funkiness, they hold an annual event, the Grand Avenue Festival. Event sponsors describe it as a “Celebration of the art, culture and history of the Grand Avenue area.” One of my personal favorite things at the festival are the guided tours. There will be 4 guided tours at this year’s festival. They will depart the Milium Textile Building (333. N. 7th Ave.) at 8,9,10, and 11 o’clock in the morning.

In addition to tours, there will be art galleries to peruse, music to enjoy, businesses to explore, food to eat and great people watching. Make sure you take a look at the Hanging Gardens and Woven Fences exhibit too.
