If you are staying in town for the holiday weekend you may be wondering what you can do to honor those who served our country and paid the highest price.
I received an email from our good friends at First American Title that has several idea. We hope you have a great holiday weekend and ask you take a moment on Monday to think about the people who gave their lives through military service. Below is a brief article about what Memorial Day is and below that are links to some things to do this weekend.
Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. While those who died are also remembered on Veterans Day, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military – in wartime or peacetime.
Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country.
