Finally had a chance to spend some time at Mother Bunch Brewing in downtown Phoenix AZ. In short, it’s a grand addition to the neighborhood.
Mother Bunch Brewing is a new brew house and restaurant located at 825 N. 7th Street, Phoenix AZ 85006 inside the historic Bayless Grocery and Market Building. The historic location gives the place a natural warmth and hospitality. Exposed brick and high open ceiling, a rare horseshoe style bar, lots of seating add to it feeling like a neighborhood joint.
Since it is a true brew pub, they will be offering a variety of Mother Bunch created beers. So far, they’ve mostly been out of their own product. Since it’s a new place I think this is to be expected… new 7 barrel system and processes to get used to and kinks to be ironed out. They’ll get there.
In the meantime, guests can choose from about 20 local beers on draft, a full bar and wine too. No one needs to go home thirsty from Mother Bunch Brewing.
The variety and quality of the food was a surprise… lots of choices on the Mother Bunch menu and what I tried was very tasty. Based on the Yelp reviews, the rest of the menu must be equally yummy. Prices are a bit on the high side but the quality was apparent. I’d like to see a few more meals in the $6.00-$7.00 range.
In addition to their lunch and dinner menu, Mother Bunch offers a weekend brunch and traffic hour (happy hour) menu. The Traffic Hour menu has good variety including Roasted Garlic, Loaded Fries, Sliders and more. Bruch at Mother Bunch has a lot of choices too including: Classic Breakfast, Chilequiles, Omelets, Eggs Benedict, plus lots more. I tried their House Smoked Chicken with Green Chile Omelet and found it very tasty.
Had a nice chat with the owner, Julie Meeker. She’s an ASU grad who worked as an E.E. and started home brewing in the early 1190’s. I asked her about the unusual name Mother Bunch. Here’s Julie’s story:
In the old days, women were the brewers. In her study of the craft, Julie ran across a book entitled Pasquils Jestes Mixed with Mother Bunches Merriments. The name caught her eye and now her business’ name.
As you might have guessed, I like Mother Bunch Brewing. The space is a great adaptive reuse, the staff feels sincere and without pretense, the food is better than expected, they are local first memebers and it adds a lot to the nearby community. FYI: Parking is limited. Maybe a good reason to buy an electric scooter from the shop next door, ride your bike or take a nice walk.
